How to Recognize and Avoid Phishing Emails

Be aware of potential scam emails and text messages that claim to be from the church. When in doubt, contact the church office directly.

One of the easiest ways to identify a scam email is to check the sender’s email address. Church staff and pastors will not contact you through an email unaffiliated with the church. Official church emails from staff members and pastors are sent through the domain: fumcwf.org.

Another way to identify if an email is a scam is to check for generic greetings, poor grammar, and spelling errors. Scams often contain grammatical issues, misspelt words, or awkward phrasing. Our church staff and pastors will always take care in our communications with you.

Be suspicious of a sense of urgency and never use a link or QR code you are unsure of. Church staff and pastors will never ask you to purchase gift cards or anything else urgently over email or text message. Additionally, church staff or pastors will never request anything without allowing follow-up questions or providing more information. This is one of the most common scams we are aware of while using a pastor’s or church staff’s name.

Your safety is important to us. If you receive an email or text message you are unsure of, contact the church office directly.
