Pastoral Reflection: People of the Way
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against things like this.” Galatians 5:22-23
The earliest Christ followers were not called “Christians.” Instead, they were known as “people of the Way” (Acts 9:2; Acts 19:9; Acts 24:14) because their lives reflected the way of Christ. They centered themselves on love, humility, prayer, generosity, and community. Their way of living was so different from the world around them that some people misunderstood it, resisted it, or even mocked it.
Today, most people would not openly mock someone for trying to live like Jesus. Still, a life shaped by Jesus can look unusual in our culture. Patience, humility, forgiveness, generosity, and self-control often stand out because they are not always the easiest or most common choices.
Since I have been at FUMC Wichita Falls, I have seen people of “the Way” in action. I have seen a church that is loving, caring, generous, and faithful. I have seen a church that knows what it means to share with others. If I could dream about what I want our community to say about FUMC Wichita Falls, I would want them to know us as “people of the Way.” I would want them to recognize Jesus in the way we move, speak, serve, and live in the world. I would love for them to see the Apostle Paul’s list of the “fruit of the Spirit” embodied in our workplaces, schools, clubs, and community. Let us strive every day, as a church and as individuals, to become more like Jesus. Like the early Christ followers, may we also be known as people of “the Way.”
A Letter from the Pastor
Dear Church,
I can’t thank you enough for the hospitality you have shown my family and me since we arrived in Wichita Falls. I am grateful for the leadership and staff who have given so much time and care to help this transition go smoothly. Transitions are never easy for a church, a pastor, or a pastor’s family, but you have welcomed us with love and grace, and for that I am truly thankful.
I am looking forward to many years of exciting and meaningful ministry in Wichita Falls. Our staff and I are already working on plans, sermons, outreach, and mission opportunities that will help us share the good news of Jesus with our community and beyond. I am excited to serve alongside you, walk with you, and grow with you as we follow Christ together into the future.
