The Vows We Make
Dear Church Family,
One of the questions I often find myself asking is: What does it really mean to be a member of Christ’s church? For many people, membership can seem like having a name on a roll or supporting the church financially. Yet in the United Methodist tradition, membership is much more than either of those things. It is a covenant relationship with God and with one another.
When we join the church, we make sacred promises to participate faithfully in the ministry of Jesus Christ through our prayers, presence, gifts, service, and witness. These vows are not simply words we speak during a membership ceremony. They are commitments that shape how we live out our faith day by day.
Beginning Sunday, October 25, at FUMC Wichita Falls, I invite you to join me for a new sermon series, The Vows We Make. Over these five weeks, we will explore each membership vow and consider how it helps us grow as disciples of Jesus Christ and strengthens our life together as a church.
Along the way, I hope we will reflect on questions such as:
- What does it mean to support the church through our prayers?
- Why does our presence matter in worship and Christian community?
- How do our gifts advance God’s mission in the world?
- What does faithful service look like in everyday life?
- How can we share our witness in ways that point others to Christ?
My prayer is that this series will help us see these vows not as obligations, but as invitations. They deepen our relationship with Christ, connect us more fully to one another, and equip us to participate in God’s work of transforming the world.
Whether you have been a United Methodist for many years, recently joined the church, or are simply exploring what it means to follow Jesus, I believe this series will encourage and challenge us all. Together, we will rediscover the joy and responsibility of belonging to Christ and serving as members of his body.
I hope you will join us each Sunday as we reflect on these sacred promises and consider what it means to live them faithfully in our daily lives.
Come and explore what it means to live out the vows we make and become the church God is calling us to be.
Grace and peace,
Pastor Aaron
