The Summer Youth Musical at FUMC is a tradition that goes back to 1948. Each year, a cast of youth, crew members, adult production team members, and other adult helpers get together for six weeks to put together a world-class production. Donations, program advertising, and ticket sales enable most productions to operate at a profit. The proceeds are then used for contributions to the Youth Service Fund, the Capital Funds Campaign of the church, Retreat and Camp Scholarships, and the Youth Scholarship.
These events have been performed under different names: Folk Festivals from 1948 to 1955, Youth Festivals from 1956 to 1961, either Folk Festivals or Youth Festivals from 1962 to 1981, and finally Summer Youth Musicals since 1982. In 1951, the entire program for the night was titled "South Specific," which consisted of the dinner followed by the musical "Show Boat." There were no musicals in 1983 and 1984.
