1998 Renovation

It is an exciting time in the life of  First United. Methodist Church as our building and renovation project is finally completed! The project is the culmination of our 1997 Capital Funds Campaign, "Building for Tomorrow, Taking Care of Today," during which we raised over $1.9 million for the renovations.

On May 21, 1998, FUMC signed a contract with Fulton-McGrath, a. local construction firm that would act as the general contractor for this major project. Work began on May 26, 1998 and was completed in March of 1999.

Some highlights of the project included:

The addition of two elevators
The first elevator is located in the corner of the education building near REC (Recreation) Lobby. It serves REC Lobby and the 1st through 3rd floors of the education building. The second elevator is located in the corner of the education building and office area, serving the undercroft, 1st floor and Heritage room. These elevators now allow for easy access to all parts of the church and will be a welcome addition to our facility.

Remodeling of the sanctuary
The pews were refurbished, new cushions added and new carpet installed. The chancel and alter areas were stained to match the original, darker color of the woodwork in the sanctuary, restoring the room to its original beauty.

Television Studio
FUMC is now equipped with a television studio to allow us to broadcast services (Television Ministry). Cameras were mounted in unobtrusive locations in the sanctuary and controlled from a studio located in the undercroft.

New Classrooms
Six new classrooms were added to the education building. These are built in the area that was previously courtyard, two rooms on each of the three floors. These classrooms provide space for our growing Children's Center and Sunday School programs.

Remodeled Restrooms
All restrooms in the building were remodeled, providing updated facilities and handicap access.

New Carpet, etc.
Carpet, tile, and wallcoverings throughout the church were replaced. Walls were painted and all windows, except stained-glass windows, were replaced with new, low-maintenance, energy-efficient windows.

A Covered Pull-In on Travis Street
The Travis Street entrance to the education building now has a covered area for cars to pull in to load/unload.

The Prothro Family Atrium
The old courtyard between the education building and Fellowship Hall were enclosed to form the atrium. A walking track and space for basketball and volleyball are now available, giving us a much-needed indoor recreation area. It also serves as a center for children's play, luncheons, vigils, wedding receptions, concerts, and family gatherings.
