Missions

First United Methodist Church is committed to serving our world
in the name of Jesus Christ.
We are actively involved
in a variety of mission and outreach programs throughout the year,
and are always looking
to expand our ministry.

If you can recommend a mission project,
contact Rev. Troy Sims!

Below are several ways FUMC is involved in ministry to our local community and beyond. If you would like to participate in any of these activities, unless otherwise noted, contact Rev. Troy Sims at 940-766-4231 or by e-mail!

Simple projects you can do on your own:

Bonham Elementary Tutoring Program

Monday afternoons during the school year from 3:30 to 4:15, a group of volunteers assist 2nd graders at Bonham Elementary School in their reading skills. If you are intersted in helping with this program, contact Joyce Barham at 940-766-4231 or send her e-mail.

Faith Mission (http://www.faithmissionwf.org/)

FUMC and several Sunday School Classes support Faith Mission financially in order to help them provide for the homeless.

Habitat for Humanity (http://www.hfhwf.org/)

Habitat for Humanity is an ecumenical non-profit organization that First United Methodist Church has had a long partnership with. We have been active in the building of several Habitat for Humanity homes from the ground up.

Heifer Project (http://www.heifer.org/)

Periodically, FUMC and some Sunday School Classes provide funds to the Heifer Project. Heifer provides animals, such as goats, water buffalo, chickens, bees, etc., to people in need around the world. The animals provide the products needed for the individuals and families to survive. Think of it this way: give a person a chicken to eat, the person is fed for a day; teach a person to raise chickens, and the person will have a meal of eggs everyday and / or be able to sell eggs to others!

Interfaith Ministries (http://www.interfaithwf.org/)

Our former pastor, Bruce Weaver (1972-81) organized Interfaith Disaster Services right after the devastating tornado in 1979. This group later became the current Interfaith Ministries. FUMC supports this ministry primarily through financial donations and by helping to stock their food pantry. In addition, several church members volunteer to work at Interfaith to support it in a number of different ways.

Mt. Calvary UMC Power Meals

Currently, two Sunday School Classes (Exodus Class & Living the Questions Class) and one group of men are taking turns to provide meals monthly at Mt. Calvary UMC to help provide for the disadvantaged and homeless of our community. In addition to the food provided, Mt. Calvary UMC provides a Bible study for those who eat.

PowerPak 4 Kids
by the Wichita Falls Area Food Bank (http://www.wfareafoodbank.com/)

Many individuals and several Sunday School Classes help provide funding for this program designed to provide children in need with backpacks filled with nutritious and easy to prepare (kid friendly) food on weekends. Backpacks are discreetly distributed to children on the last day before the weekend or holiday vacation.

Salvation Army

Every December, FUMC provides gifts for children for the "Angel Tree Program" sponsored by the Salvation Army. Individuals supply gifts for one or more, and some small groups, such as Sunday School Classes, also sponsor gifts for anges. In 2007, FUMC provided gifts for 135 local "angels!"

Wichita Falls Area Disaster Recovery Committee

Following the floods in and around the Wichita Falls Area in the summer of 2007, the WFADRC was created to help fulfill the unmet needs of the flood victims. To date, FUMC has provided funding, supplies, and volunteers to help meet the needs of those in our community. Similarly, FUMC has acted as a liason (working with the North Texas Conference of the United Methodist Church) between the WFADRC and UMCOR to receive funding to help cover operating expenses.
