It is increasingly challenging to teach our children to live by the Golden Rule while they are growing up in a “talk to the hand” world. It may no longer be a priority to understand the fine points of garden parties and cotillions, but as technology transforms interactions, simple kindness needs to keep pace.

Ask yourself if your child will ever:

  • Send a text message?
  • Eat at a friend’s house?
  • Go on a date?
  • Have a job interview?

If so, then he or she will need the basic tools to do so politely and with confidence. Simple skills like making introductions, small talk and table manners must be learned and are some of the topics that will be covered during Manners Matter.

Manners Matter is a five-night event for 5th and 6th graders led by the fun and lively Dee King and sponsored by the Children’s Council of First United Methodist Church. It will be held on Thursday evenings beginning January 18 from 6:30-8:00 in the Fellowship Hall. Our last evening will be February 15 from 6:00-8:00; that night we will have dinner and dancing for the kids. February 15 is the only time we will provide food.

Cost for the event is $65 per participant and must be paid by January 14, 2017, which is also the last day to register. This includes the cost of the dinner-dance on February 15.

Dress code: Gentlemen will wear dress pants, dress shoes (not sandals or sneakers), and a collared shirt. Jackets and ties are not required. Ladies should wear modest dresses or skirts, no more than 3 inches above the knee. They should have covered shoulders. Shoes should be appropriate for the event (no flip flops or sneakers).

Registration will be open to church members and School for Little People alumni on December 1 and will open to the public on December 15. Registration will be available online and payment information will be emailed to you once the class has reached 30 participants. Last day to register and pay is January 14, 2017.
