The First Christmas Study at FUMC

Get Into That Christmas Spirit With a New Study!

Christmas is just around the corner, so prepare yourself by taking part in the new study at two different times:

  • Thursdays, 10:30-12:00noon beginning Thursday, November 15; or
  • Sundays, 6:30-8:00pm beginning Sunday, November 18.

We’ll study the new book The First Christmas: What the Gospels Really Teach About Jesus’ Birth by Marcus Borg & John Dominic Crossan.

In this book, Borg & Crossan “explore the beginning of the life of Christ, peeling away the sentimentalism that has built up over the last two thousand years around this most well known of all stories to reveil they trugh of wht the gospels actually say.” They “help us to see this well-known narrative afresh by answering the question, “What do these stories mean?” in context of both the first century and the twenty-first century. They successfully show that the Christmas story, read in its original context, is far richer and more challenging than people imagine” (from the book’s dust cover).

We’ll study two chapters per week until Thursday, December 20 or Sunday, December 23 (beginning with the Preface & Chapter 1) please read before class). The cost of the book is $15.

Details about this class:
