Elementary Age Classes

This year, we are using a brand new curriculum produced by Cokesbury called Deep Blue Kids. Deep Blue is the new awe-inspiring resource for children which includes adventure, exciting stories, science experiments, arts and crafts, animated video storytelling, and active games-all combined into a living–faith experience that will help children discover what it means to be a disciple of Jesus Christ today!

Children in 4th and 5th grade will be using a curriculum developed by Shine. Shine is a dynamic curriculum that calls children to experience the transforming power of God’s love. It allows children to nurture trust in God and invites children to follow Jesus through imaginative and interactive biblical storytelling

How do I know which is my child’s class?

Classes are determined by school grade. Kindergarteners and first graders are in a class together. Second and third graders are paired, and fourth and fifth graders share a classroom.

Where do they meet?

All children’s classes except Confirmation meet on the second floor of the education wing. They are located in the following rooms:

  • Grades K-1        Room 203
  • Grades 2-3        Room 215
  • Grades 4-5        Room 216

When does Sunday School meet?

Sunday School is from 9:15 to 10:15am. Please pick up your child from Sunday School promptly at 10:15. This allows teachers to clean up and get to worship before it begins.

Who teaches these classes?

  • K-1st grade Sunday School is taught by Katie and William White, who have a daughter in the class. They are the parents of three young children and have the gift of communicating about God to children in fresh and fun ways.
  • 2nd-3rd grade Sunday School is led by our director of children’s ministries Kim English along with Courtney Grimes. They both have grade-school children and are seasoned Sunday School teachers who have a passion for Christian education.
  • 4th-5th grade Sunday School is taught by Bryan Press and Jenny Jameson. Bryan brings many years of teaching experience. He is insightful and innovative in preparing lessons that engage tweens.  Jenny brings youth and enthusiasm in her desire to serve the children of this church in an impactful way.

What is the procedure for taking my child to Sunday School?

FUMC has adopted a policy called Ministry Safe in order to keep all children and adults safe in church. Because of this, we ask that a parent or guardian walk their children to Sunday School and sign them in on the class roster. You will also need to pick your child up from Sunday School. Children will not be “released” from Sunday School without an adult. At 10:20, children may be taken to the nursery.

How can I keep up with what my children are learning in Sunday School?

Each month, our director of children’s ministries, Kim English, writes a newsletter detailing the month’s theme and each week’s lesson. The newsletter will also give general information about upcoming events for children’s ministries. These newsletters are available in your child’s Sunday School classroom or can be emailed to you upon request.
